Chris says "It's all about the music and chasing the perfect sound. This entails creating the perfect notes, timing and tone and texture in order to raise the most exquisite sound from this piece of wood known as the violin. The secret to doing this? Hard work and lots of practice."
Chris is 23 years old and has been playing fiddle music for 16 years but has been studying classical violin for 17 years. He is in grade 10 in the Royal Conservatory Program. On July 24, 2004 Chris won fourth place in the BC Provincial Fiddle Championships in Prince George, BC. On May 16, 2003, Christopher won third place in the B.C. Provincial Championship Fiddling Category in Abbotsford, BC. On June 15, 2002, Chris won second place in the 2002 B.C. Provincial Championship Fiddling Category in Kelowna, BC. He has also been provincial youth fiddling champion for two consecutive years in 1999/2000 Christopher and Patrick also won fourth place in the Twin Fiddling Category which was open to all ages in 2004.
There have been many competitions and honors for the McGregors. Christopher was invited to compete in the Canadian Grandmasters Competition on August 25, 2001 and August 24, 2002 with 30 of Canada?s top fiddlers. He placed in the top twenty. He was invited again to play at the Grandmasters Competition on August 24, 2003 in Ottawa but declined the honour due to other priorities. He was also invited to play at the GrandMasters Youth Talent Showcase in Nepean, Ottawa on August 26, 2000. These GrandMasters events are by invitation only, which means you have to have established credentials in your home province in order to be invited. Chris and Pat were also invited by Calvin Vollrath to perform at his 10th Annual Tape Release Party in Edmonton, Alta on March 25, 2002. Chris has played back up on three other CD productions by local Fraser Valley artists.
Other honors; Chris won third place in the 1997 Junior Category in the Saskatchewan Provincial Fiddling Championship held in Govan Saskatchewan. In 1996, Chris and Pat won first and second place respectively in the novice fiddling category in the Western Canada Bluegrass Fiddling Championship held in Chilliwack, B.C. There have been many other first, second and third place trophies for Christopher at the various contests throughout the province over the last four years!
Christopher's hobbies are karate and acting. Christopher played the Fiddler in the Chilliwack Academy of Music's presentation of "Fiddler on the Roof" in July 2000. He won the best actor award in grade 11 and grade 12 for his performances as Mathew in "Anne of Green Gables" and a jazz violinist/vocalist in "Fame". He also likes to play computer games and plays with the Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra as well as teaches fiddle part time to local students. He graduated from UBC in spring of 2006 with a BSc degree and is anticipating returning to graduate studies.
