The McGregors come from a strong tradition of fiddlers. There are five fiddlers
in the McGregor Family of six. They are Christopher, Patrick, Nichole, Angela and Dale McGregor.
Dale's grandfather from northern Quebec, his father and uncle from Birch Island in northern Ontario all played the fiddle at country-dances. Dale was given his first fiddle by his grandfather when Dale was four. The tradition continues with the McGregor children who each started their musical careers in violin when they turned five. One of the most poignant statements was made by Christopher and Patrick who said,
"I play the music of my grandfathers. My great grandfather, grandfather and great uncle played the fiddle and now my father plays the fiddle. Now, so do we! It's a tradition and we hope to share and pass the tradition on to future generations."
The McGregor family have entertained locally in the Fraser Valley for various functions for the last 17 years at functions like dances, weddings, cedilahs, local attractions like Minter Gardens, Kilby Museum, retirement homes, local churches, community fairs, music festivals, jamborees, extended care units, coffee houses, fund-raisers, charity events, conferences with one hundred to four thousand attendees and at fiddle contests in three western provinces. The McGregor's performances are enhanced by the McGregor girls fantastic Irish Stepdancing performances.
The following performances are among the more unique things the McGregors have done. The new Chilliwack Prospera Centre opened in September 2004. Jan Arden, Leahy and Adam Gregory played the Prospera Centre on opening Saturday night, September 10. The McGregors were the first and second local acts to play the Prospera Centre the next day. Chris, Pat and Nichole have also played violin with the Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra for a number of years. Chris and Pat were part of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra's May 16, 2000 bid to set the Guiness world record for the largest orchestra in which 6,452 students played Beethoven's Ode to Joy in one big orchestra at BC Place.
The McGregors have also been on television on the local cable company and have even been on a short segment of a C.B.C. program on Metis fiddling featuring Canadian Fiddlers John Arcand and Calvin Vollrath. They have also been on a live radio broadcasts in BC. The McGregors entertained at the Canada Day celebrations in Chilliwack as one of the feature acts in the evening out door performance. As well, they assisted a Metis organization with a Metis celebration in Chilliwack in 2001 by organizing a traditional fiddling contest. The contest had provincial level caliber talent competing in the contest and was enjoyed by all the spectators.
To celebrate the fiddling tradition, the McGregors recorded a CD on June 28, 1998 in Cultus Lake. The CD is titled "The McGregor Family-Fourth Generation." The CD is a tribute to traditional fiddling that has been handed down through the generations. It features traditional fiddle tunes but also some original tunes composed by Dale McGregor. A new style is evident on the CD and that is "West Coast Fiddling" which is a combination of old timey and Celtic fiddling. It has the precision and technical feel of "Ottawa Valley" fiddling combined with the robust liveliness and haunting melodies of the Celtic and classical style. The McGregors' classical training is apparent and their mature playing proficiency serves to make the tunes quite polished. The CD appeals to a broad spectrum of musical tastes and Fiddle magazine reviews have been enthusiastic.
The McGregors also worked with the Central Fraser Valley Fiddlers during the summer of 1999 to produce a recording of Old Tyme dance music. The McGregors also play on the CD. The CD entitled "Silver and Gold" consists of eighteen great tunes and has been well received across the country. It is a fine ensemble of thirty-five musicians playing great standard dance tunes such as The St. Anne's Reel and The SilverTone Waltz. There are also other medleys such as a toe tapping jig medley and a beautiful waltz medley.
The McGregors went back into the studio in October of 2002 to work on their next CD. It was released on May 16, 2003 at the BC Provincial Fiddle Championship. It features more traditional fiddle music and more original McGregor West Coast Fiddling tunes with contributing composers like April Verch, Gordie Carnahan, Scott MacAuley and Don Olds. It is an eclectic collection of tunes ranging from the traditional like Danny Boy to the newer styles such as Zorba the Greek. Reviews again are very enthusiastic about this latest work by the McGregors. See our CD Page for more information.
The McGregors continue perform in the Fraser Valley and to tour the province performing their brand of music. They have several concerts lined up for the 2007 summer festival season.
